Response to Emma- Week Nine (10/28)

Hello Emma! I really enjoyed reading your post. I also find it crazy that pirates were not a part or history class. Thinking back on the little I did learn in school, what I was taught consists entirely of the simple fact that the were illegal and hanged if caught. The rest of my knowledge about them is based on the oh so accurate movies and tv shows. I find it funny that even though I had twelve years of history classes I have learned more about the world in these few months than I ever had before.

October 28- We believe we are judged

I really enjoyed the discussion this week and how we dug down into the definition of feminisms and the way that society tries to control women. Thinking back on everything we discussed there are so many social things that tie women to an expectation. These include hair styles, hair color, outfits, and even actions and personality. These expectations are also all ways changing and in my opinion they made to seem that if you don't do fallow them you will be an outcast. I am not a very fashionable person, I don't like to go shopping and I'm really not to interested in spending a lot of money on clothing just to keep up with trends. However, sometimes I feel that if I don't ware the crop-top or the ripped jeans people will think I'm weird and will avoid me, and I'm sure that I'm also not the only person who feels this way. Who knows who started this belief that we are all judge for everything we do, whether it was a man or a women, but it is so engraved into ou...

Response to Brooke : Blog for the week of October 21

I completely agree with your post. The fact that the women are the one who are scolded and punished is completely ridiculous, especially if it's something they had no control over and are the victims. I is completely unreasonable that the men are give excuses like "it's her fault for dressing like that." or "boys will be boys." Not only do these comments legitimize there actions they also makes it seem as thought the women is at fault and that they did not need to control they're actions. I really liked your comment about how the older generations need to set the example for the new generation. It is completely true, for more than just respecting women. Children look up too, learn form, and even copy adults that they admire and if we set the right example than that is what they will do as well.

October 21- You need a man

The idea that a woman needs a man has been around for centuries and is still greatly prevalent in today's society. Being in a relationship seems to be something that determines a woman's worth sometimes. I know many people who push the idea of getting into a relationship and act as though it is the most important thing in the world. Some parents push it on to their kids and some friends push it on to each other. I also notice that even some girls believe that their worth is determined by men. These things are truly bothering, even after so many years of feminist movements and the many woman who tell other women that there worth is not determined by a man, it is still is pushed by people. I have never been in a relationship and I have experienced others pushing for me to get a boyfriend. They don’t really come out and say “you should get a boyfriend” but they make comments like “do you have a boyfriend yet?” or “are you talking to anyone?” After hearing these comments over and...

Response to Emma’s 10/7 post

Hi Emma, I found your post to be quite interesting. I honestly Didn’t even consider the fact that Garcilaso’s Spanish root helped popularize his book. However, it makes sense see as if he had no ties to Spanish upperclass his book most likely would never have been seen. It was quite an interesting thing to consider.

October 7: Inca weapons vs Spanish weapons

This week we talked about the difference between the Indigenous weapons and Spanish weapons. I found the idea that the Inca weapons weren't technically inferior to the Spanish weaponry to be very interesting. The fact that the Inca weapons were simply suited for their fighting style actually makes a lot of sense. The Inca didn’t have access to horses and fought head on, because of this they could use short heave objects, like a club, that needed a lot of force to use. If you tried to use something like that while riding a horse it would be much harder to use and much less effective. I couldn’t even imagine trying to swing a heavy club while trying to keep my balance on a horse. I would probably fall off as soon as I tried. Also, the fact that the Inca weaponry can not be considered inferior to the Spanish took me by surprise. I thought that the Spanish were successful during the conquest because they used weapons with better killing ability. I was pretty shocked to find out that ...

Response to Lexie: Díaz vs. Cortés - Blog for the week of September 30th

Hello Lexie! I really enjoyed reading you post, and you made a lot of points that I would also agree with. I too was very shocked at how much Díaz mentioned Malintzín and how much he credited her with. After reading Cortés letters I too never thought that a Spaniard would ever give Malintzín the credit that she deserves and was very grateful for the fact that Díaz did.
