Week of September 30: Religion if such a frightful concept

I am a Christian and I have believed in the Christian God all my life, however, as I watch the people around me use this religion to hurt others I start to question these beliefs. I remember being taught what Christianity was when I was little. We learned that our God was kind and forgiving, that he loved all no matter their background, race, status, or even sins. However, as I watch the world around me where people curse, scorn and even use violence on those with different beliefs, and read the history books about the massacre and annihilation of cultures that were not Christian I begin to wonder what my religion actually is. It seems as though people are just using religion as a way to justify their otherwise cruel and horrible actions. In Cortes’s letter to the king, he constantly claims that his actions were in the name of God as he claims the natives land for the king and destroys their idols without regard for them. “The most important of these idols, and the ones in whom t...

Comment on Jaydens post: Week of September 23

Hello Jayden, I really enjoyed reading your post. I also agree that critical thinking is something very important and am very grateful for the amount we work with it in case so can improve on it. I completely agree with you that this week was very interesting and I can't wait to see what we do and learn next week.

9/23 Distortions of Reality

Ever since we are young we are told things that we regard as fact without considering if there is  another truth. I remember growing up only knowing Columbus was the great man who discovered America. This was a fact that the teachers and adults that I regarded as all knowing gave me so I never thought to even question it. As I grew up I did begin to question these thoughts more and with these questions came facts like how the vikings discovered America long before Columbus and how the natives weren’t actually treated the same way that i had been told. However, I never thought about how much of Columbus’ voyage was actually being romanticized. 1492: Conquest of Paradise made it really obvious how altered the history of Columbus actually was. I honestly was very disturbed by the fact that they were allowed to claim that the film was all fact even with its biased research and production. Though sadly I know that there are people who wouldn’t even question the accuracy of the fi...

Comment on Olivia’s post

Hi Olivia. I really liked you post and I thought that it was quite thoughtful. My attention was also caught by Baudrillard’s theory on material culture and I strongly agree that many object do have a further meaning behind it.

Entry 2: New Knowledge

The Making of Latin America. I started this class with a bit of curiosity and a little more confusion. I wasn’t sure what to expect. I knew little to nothing about Latin America and I was aware of it, but I would have never imagined how much of history and the world I was actually missing out on knowing. I have only been a part of this class for two weeks now but the new things I’ve learned about Latin America have been in a much greater quantity than the new things I learned about the world in a year's worth of history class. In most of the history classes I've taken I feel as though we learn the same thing over and over again just from a different mouth. I’ve learned about WW1 and 2 and the civil war so much that one might think it was the only thing that ever happened in our history. It’s so refreshing to learn about something different. On top of learning something completely new I also am thrilled that I am being told more than the victor's side of the story. It ...

Hi everyone, my name is Victoria Miller. I am majoring in General Business and after will continue on to graduate school to become a physical therapist. I am from Adrian MI and have two brothers, one older and one younger. My older brother's name is Benjamin and he is 21 and my younger brother's name is Aaron and he is almost 15. I went to Onsted for 9 years then switched to Adrian to finish high school. I also did Irish step dancing for six years and participated in the school musical and one year of show choir. I had hoped to do more but COVID put a slight dent in my plans. I played flute and piccolo for my high school band as well as being drum major senior year. I am excited to learn about a history that I’ve never got to learn about before and to talk and discuss the topics we learn with everyone.
